After having lived in Costa Rica for seven years Manuel Lara returns to his home country to reunite with his past. Having changed his name; he returns as Esteban Zaldívar, he had fled his home as a fugitive of justice, having been accused of killing Juliana Alcázar, the woman he loved, a crime he did not commit. He returns to his home to prove his innocence and to find who is truly responsible for Juliana’s death.
Juliana dies when she falls from the mountain she is climbing with Esteban. After the fall, Esteban seeks out his partner, Harold, who reveals to him the sinister plan that he conceived to inculpate him of Juliana’s death. But Harold, who is then murdered by other men to silence him, is not the only responsible one. Someone else has ordered the murder and Esteban has returned to discover who it was. What Esteban ignores is that Harold survived the accident.
He is now a quadriplegic who cannot speak and is confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life. His life-long girlfriend, Clemencia, takes care of him. She is an ambitious woman who will stop at nothing to achieve what she wants. He returns with the Santamaria’s as his only lead and starting point. The Santamaria’s had a motive: Juliana’s mother’s inheritance, which they got as soon as Juliana died. Esteban, believing that they are the guilty ones, decides to start his investigation with them. But he now has a dangerous enemy: Clemencia. Clemencia who knows Esteban’s true identity, knows that he has returned to the country, and she will use that information to pressure him.
Esteban purchases a property and sets up a business like the one he had before he fled. Here he meets a trio of youngsters: Ximena, Saúl and Fernando and befriends them. Ximena falls in love with Esteban at first sight and when she finds out about his plans, together with her friends, she offers to help him. Esteban meets Angela, Ximena’s sister, the woman who will change his life and will give him new hope, but she is married. Angela is married to Alfonso Santamaría, precisely one of the men who Esteban suspects to have framed him. While helping Esteban, Ximena investigates and discovers that Juliana was not the woman who Esteban thought. She discovers that Juliana had a dark past: and that together with her lover, she had stolen an enormous amount of money from several people.
Esteban and Angela’s love will find many obstacles. On the one hand, Alfonso is not going to allow his wife to leave him and will do everything he can to have her stay by his side. Esteban is persecuted by the detectives that Francisco Santamaría hired. Furthermore, things are going to become even more complicated, because, at the height of his relationship with Angela, when both have given themselves a chance to love each other, she begins to suspect that Esteban had something to do with her father’s murder.
